Hi, I’m Dr. hoffie conradie

After qualifying in medicine and gaining experience at Tygerberg Hospital, I was drawn to serve in deep rural Eastern Cape, where I worked in district hospitals. It was here, under the guidance of mentors, that I discovered my passion for family medicine. The patient-centred and community-based principles resonated deeply with my desire to provide holistic care.

For 20 years, I practised as a general practitioner and family physician in both the state health service and private practice, including a period as a GP in rural Canada. In 2003, I joined Stellenbosch University (SU) as a family physician at Worcester Hospital, where I recovered from burnout. This personal experience led me to realign my professional life, focusing on my passions for rural medicine and medical education. I was privileged to lead the creation of a rural postgraduate family medicine programme and the first Rural Clinical School for undergraduate training in South Africa. My work in family medicine eventually led to my role as an associate professor at SU.

After retirement, I continued to consult in various capacities, focusing on building clinical and teaching capacity in district hospitals through distributed medical education programmes at SU, Walter Sisulu University, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. These programmes aim to improve healthcare services in underserved areas of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. I’ve also contributed to the establishment of Zimbabwe’s first Family Medicine Post-Graduate Training Programme since 2019.

In 2016/17, I expanded my expertise into coaching, completing a Diploma in Practitioner Coaching through The Coaching Centre (South Africa) with accreditation from the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Since then, I’ve been coaching healthcare professionals individually and in groups, helping them navigate the complexities of their roles with resilience and purpose. My approach is further enriched by the Enneagram tool, which I am accredited to use through Five Lens, and I have a deep interest in mindfulness-based meditation, which I incorporate into my coaching to promote balance and self-awareness.

I am also a member of TakingCare (www.takingcare.co.za), an initiative that supports healthcare workers in managing stress and preventing burnout. This aligns closely with my own experiences and my mission to help healthcare professionals care for themselves as deeply as they care for their patients.

My Approach

Integral Framework

As an integral coach and medical professional, I take a holistic approach that considers every aspect of your life—your mind, body, emotions, and relationships. Together, we’ll explore how these areas intersect, helping you grow both personally and professionally. This framework ensures that our work isn’t just about short-term solutions but lasting, meaningful change.

mindfulness Practice

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, mindfulness is a powerful tool to stay present and grounded. I incorporate mindfulness practices into my coaching to help you manage stress, enhance focus, and build emotional resilience. It’s about learning to navigate the pressures of your work with clarity and calm.

non-violent communication

Effective communication is essential in healthcare, whether with patients or colleagues. I use Non-Violent Communication (NVC) to help you improve your communication skills, reduce conflict, and build stronger, more compassionate relationships. NVC equips you to navigate challenging conversations with empathy and ease.

Person-Centred Care

As doctors, we care deeply for our patients, but it’s just as important to care for ourselves. My approach to coaching emphasises person-centred care, not just for your patients but for you as well. By prioritising your well-being, you can serve others with greater empathy, clarity, and strength.
